| Our
clean-up Plan:
As in 2003 and 2004, the Karma Police will clean up all its shit and leave the camp area better than we found it. To accomplish this, we've established the following strategies: Through our discussion forum and emails, we are sharing information on preparing for BM. We are all working to reduce the amount of packaging we are bringing in. We pack in all the necessary tools and supplies for clean-up, including a shovel, a vicegrips and ample high quality odor-proof trash bags. Garbage will be taken out and
driven to an open landfill or back to a We use materials for our campsite that lessen waste, are recyclable, or are reusable. We don't expect to have major activities that will generate excess garbage. Our kitchen will only be for our camp and honored guests. We don't plan to have any fires
on the playa surface. We will have a barbecue, whose coals and ash will
go in the garbage or be taken to Other than our barbecue, we will NOT be burning any items. Based on experience of cleanup crews from the last several years, we have banned the use of adornments that use small feathers and sequins. Two camp trash bins with lids will be set up and secured against severe winds. We will not be creating large holes in the playa. Those that we are making will be from narrow gauge rebar to hold our two domes to the playa. We are aware that when removing items (like rebar) that have been pounded deep into the playa, they tend to pull apart the soil creating more damage than intended. With that in mind we will slowly and carefully remove all rebar and wood posts and tamp down soil upheavals. When we are giving out snocones, we will provide garbage bags for the snocone cups to be placed in. We will build a gray water
evaporation system. A wood frame made of 2x4s will sit just under the
wood palette used to stand on while taking a Upon departure and after the camp has packed, the camp Earth Guardians will gather all Karma Police. The camp Earth Guardians will then have Karma Police canvas our space in a grid pattern scouring the playa for every last bit of debris. Officers will be required to dedicate two hours for general playa cleanup. We will also each walk a bit of the playa as well, picking up every last bit of trash, leaving the desert surface only marked by our feet, hands, and bottoms, bidding it a fond farewell until we return once again in 2006. The Designated Earth Guardians We will designate two officers as the camp Earth Guardians. They will ensure that the camp
stays clean before, during, and after the They will be given the task of making the camp fun, spontaneous, and clean. They will get help with the cleanup from campmates and fellow BRC residents if and when it is needed. They will take part in the planning of purchases and encourage every camper to reuse / recycle / reduce. They will be there when it's time to take down and sweep the camp for every last trace They will make sure everything goes with the last camper and that nothing is left. One note to this list of responsibilities: The Earth Guardians will NOT be the daily cleanup crew. Precinct 37 is a community; realizing that any trash or MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) can be blown away or buried at any moment, it is expected that each officer will do their share, on a daily basis, to help keep the camp clean. If everyone cleans as we go, no one has to do a lot. |
